Spaniard Barragan is doing his best to return to action at Lommel’s Grand Prix after the fast Spaniard picked up a severe injury in a training accident in Spain.
The 23 year old from Madrid broke a rib and damaged his spleen during a training crash where his factory KTM landed on his back. The spleen was removed through an operation and Barragan is currently at home recovering as he cannot do any kind of training at the moment.
In order to be ready for the Belgian GP in Lommel on August 2, the KTM Silver Action man plans to restart training next week, beginning with a light program and then building on his strength to be back to top form as soon as possible.
Barragan, who hopes to be back riding his KTM machine in three weeks, was one of the major players in the 2009 FIM Motocross World Championship and the accident was a big blow to what could be his best season ever.
With his best result in the Championship being last year’s fourth in MX1, at the British GP –the last before the crash- Barragan had just dropped from second to third in the Championship but he was ready to fight back at Ernee. Though the first ever Spaniard to win a Grand Prix at home courtesy of this year’s success at Bellpuig –his second GP win in 2009- saw his Championship ambitions come to an end in early June when he crashed and injured.
“I was really unlucky,” Barragan confessed. “This is disappointing because I thought it was going to be a good year. There is not much to add, I just want to come back and I will train hard to be at the gate of Lommel’s GP. It has been tough but it will pass, thanks to my team, my sponsors, KTM and everybody who supported me.”
“We are so sorry about Jonathan’s misfortune,” KTM Silver Action team manager Fulvio Crippa continued. “We thought this could be his and our best season in the series but it just did not happen. Now we plan to be back at Lommel and get a few more good results before the season ends.”
