With only a few weeks before the MX World Championship kicks off in Zolder, the Yamaha Van Beers racing team took the opportunity to present it’s three man line up for the 2006 MX GP and International racing season.

None other than five times MX World champion, Joel Smets acted as master of ceremonies as he captured the attention of the attending press, sponsors and family with his lively humour and broad knowledge of the team.

After introducing team owner and manger Adri Van Beers and his dedicated mechanics and personnel, Smets went on to present the riders.

The youngest member and exotic new comer to the team is South African sixteen-year-old, Sacha Naude. After winning many junior titles in South Africa, Smets asked Naude if he was expected to live up to the reputation of former world champions and fellow countrymen, Greg Albertyn and Grant Langston. “I have come here to follow a dream,” expressed Naude. “I know I am in a good team and I just need to learn as much as possible in the sand. It’s going to be really tough but I am up for the challenge.” Naude will contend the MX2 class in the Dutch championship as well as selected European championship and German ADAC rounds.

Staying with the MX2 class, Smets was delighted to introduce Aigar Leok who after finishing 2nd at the final GP last year in Ireland is expected to be somewhat of dark horse for the MX2 GP title and no doubt a contender for the Dutch MX2 championship. “Last year I expected to do much better than I did. I had to sort out my mind half way through the season but I proved that I can be on the podium. The new Yamaha YZ250F is really great. The team is like a family and we all work together. My goal is to finish top five in the world championship and to be on the podium as many times as possible,” vowed the friendly Estonian.

Final introduction of the evening was Belgian MX1 rider, Manuel Priem. Smets, who trains regularly with the twenty-four-year-old was adamant that Priem has what it takes to be a regular top ten contender but he reiterated that ‘Diesel Priem’ has to be more confident. His 5th place finish in Nismes and 6th in Lierop previous season prove that Priem has great technique on both hard pack as well as sand surfaces. After narrowly missing out on the Dutch Open title Priem is confident that he can go one better for 2006. “I am grateful for the opportunity to ride for Adri and the Yamaha Van Beers team. My goal is to finish in the top ten of the MX1 and of course go for the Dutch title I narrowly missed last year. Joël and I were talking about it last week and I have to believe more in myself.”

To end the evening, Smets concluded with an anecdote and a piece of advice directed at the Yamaha Van Beers riders. “To be world champion you have to train harder than all the rest!” He would know.

Con 16 años y ya se está buscando la vida en Europa si lo hace igual de bien que GL se íra a USA. No creo que en España haya esa mentalidad, tal vez JB con unos añitos más.
