Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., walked away with $100,000 by winning both Friday and Saturday nights’ events at the Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael finished second overall and Honda’s Kevin Windham finished third. Honda’s Josh Grant, of Riverside, Calif., swept both nights of racing in the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) AMA Supercross Lites class. Honda’s Jake Weimer finished second overall and Kawasaki’s Chris Gosselaar finished third.
Suzuki’s Ivan Tedesco, of Murrieta, Calif., won the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award, but crashed on lap 3 during Saturday night’s contest. Honda’s David Vuillemin, Stewart and Carmichael, followed Tedesco, respectively. As Carmichael passed Vuillemin on lap 8, Stewart snuck to the inside of both of them and took the lead.
Carmichael stalked Stewart until lap 21 when Stewart stalled his bike in a corner of the track on the outside portion of the MGM Grand Garden Arena, thus causing Carmichael to crash. Carmichael ended up finishing second and Vuillemin ended in third place. “What was weird is that it wasn’t a mistake on my part,” said Carmichael. “James stalled it and I had no where to go and I went down. I had no intention on doing so well this weekend.
This guy next to me (Stewart) has grown up over the last year and we have had some epic battles.” Stewart stated, “This is what you guys came to see. This gives me a lot of motivation to go home and work hard. I didn’t know it was going to be so tough to race 25 laps like that. It has been a great weekend in Las Vegas.” Stewart’s mechanic Jeremy Albrecht was awarded the Toyota Trifecta award vehicle (Toyota Tundra) for being the evening’s top mechanic. In the MMI AMA Supercross Lites main event, last night’s winner Josh Grant moved into the lead early by winning the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award.
Several riders went down in turn one, including Gosselaar who finished second Friday night. On lap 8 Weimer passed fellow Honda Rider Steve Boniface and ended up finishing in second place. After failing to qualify last night, Honda’s Tommy Hahn rallied from the back of the pack to secure a third-place finish. “We trained really hard and are working towards the supercross championship,” said Grant. “I am having a good time and am stoked about next year.” Alpinestars AMA Supercross Class Overall Results

Built into this year's Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open format was the three-part Toyota Trifecta bonus program that paid additional money to the fastest qualifier for each night's event, a bonus to each night's Progressive Direct Holeshot winner and a bonus for any rider that completed the Toyota Trifecta challenge by being the fastest qualifier, getting the Progressive Direct Holeshot and winning the main event. Any rider that hit the Toyota Trifecta earned a $50,000 bonus each night in addition to the regular event purse and any rider that could "Double Down" and hit the Toyota Trifecta both nights walked away with $250,000 for the weekend.
